Foot Progress

This was at the beginning. Completely wrapped up tight.

Gnarly stitches. Swollen and bruised foot.

Stitches are now out and I'm wearing the toe alignment splint. Swelling has gone down a lot. Still on crutches for another four weeks. Pretty much pain free! Any and all are welcome to come visit to break up the monotony of the day. (I do a lot of sitting around.) Feel free to clean and cook while you are here. :)

Foot update

Has it been a week?!? Oiy, it seems like MUCH MORE time has passed. Every little stinkin thing I do takes about 5 times longer now since I'm on crutches. Well... except sitting and sleeping and reading... but I digress.

The foot itself has not caused me much pain. Various persons had told me to expect much pain, so I am pleased to report that it really doesn't hurt. I stopped taking the heavy pain pills on Sunday (today is Thursday) and I'm just taking strong Ibuprofin now to help with the swelling and inflammation.

I had a doctor checkup yesterday where they finally took off the heavy wrapping/dressing from the surgery. He said my foot looks like the healing process has begun. I did not realize the extent of the swelling and bruising until he took the wrappings off, but he assured me that was normal and it looked great. There was no sign of infection and I should continue on. I have 9 gnarly stitches too. :) Oh yeah, and my big toe is amazingly straight! My wrapping now is an Unna boot (not really a boot, but a tight wrapping) with Ace wrap over that and I'm supposed to wear my old friend (the ginormous black boot that I had packed away in the closet) when I am up and around.

So I am to continue on crutches for another five weeks. My mother is leaving today, so anyone else is welcome to bring food or visit and clean while you are here. I didn't realize how hard it would be to do things on crutches. Yes, I am (trying to) resting and sitting a lot. I have a quilt that I am working on finishing (thanks Mary) and there is always some stitching to do. The girls are a little frustrated that I don't play with them much but I try when I can.

Today is surgery day

I (Mindy) am having surgery today to fix this foot. For those not aware, I have a bunion that has become a lot more painful these past couple months.

Yes this is the same foot I broke back in December. Is this surgery related to that break? No, well... sorta... maybe... kinda? The break was on the outside of my foot. As a result, I walked more on the inside of my foot, exacerbating the bunion and causing pain there.

Anyway, it needs fixed and today is the day. I will be on crutches for six weeks, so I have checked out a lot of books and movies from the library and would welcome any visitors to keep me company as I sit.

The bunion area is that bump that sticks out at the base of the big toe. (Nice sandal tan line huh?)

And here is a picture of my foot at rest. This is what it naturally does. The toe is growing crookedly underneath the others.
